Italian term or phrase: Soprintendente Speciale
Soprintendente Speciale per il Dipartimento Storico Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale di XXX

I usually drop the Special which tends to overload the job title but I don't want to offend this person. There are hundreds of translations on google but I would appreciate a suggestion given the circumstances.

Thank you Susanna. I think this is the closest to the meaning in this context. This seems to be the choice of all the other cities too.

Asker: Sorry I haven't got back to you but still mired down in this translation. I think the problem here is that the holder of this position (and certain others) will think he's very important. There are many museums involved and each will have it's own curator. Do you think you can have a curator of curators. I'm not sure if this person would like this description. It's a tough one

agree  ValentinaGi: I agree with you. Many dictionaries give for 'soprintendente' (di musei e simili) this translation

agree  Cathryn Taylor: Tricia - how about 'special services curator' to show that what he's responsible for may be special in some way without implying that he is ;-)

Asker: thanks Moranna, I did consider the term "honorary" but I think this post involves a lot of policy and decision making whereas an honoray position is more of a name than responsibility. Thanks very much for you suggestion
