Italian to English translations [PRO] Archaeology / Sardinian archaeological sites | | Italian term or phrase: soffitto a forno | "....costituita da un piccolo vestibolo rettangolare che immette una celletta semicircolare con soffitto a forno".
Part of a description of a necropolis site in Sardinia. I've never come across the term "soffitto a forno" before. |
| | | 'oven-shaped' vault | Explanation: Take a look at this excerpt from a bilingual website,
'... a third necropolis is located in Sa Grutta area, on the south-eastern sides of Mount Narcao, at about 1 Km west of Montessu site. There are at least three ‘domus de janas’, even though it is most likely that there must have been more of them around, either buried or destroyed. The rocky wall onto which ‘domus’ open shows a broken spot, due to an ancient collapse, which originated a V-outline. To the south, a single-cell tomb (tomb No.1), with semi-circular plan, was heavily damaged by erosion. On the opposite wall, a second domus can be identified (tomb No.2), also heavily damaged; it is a single, semi-circular space, provided with ‘oven-shaped’ vault, with a simple, raised doorway and a bench along the back wall.'

Here's the final passage of the above text, in Italian
'... si tratta di un unico ambiente semicircolare, fornita di copertura “a forno”, con ingresso semplice sopraelevato e bancone lungo la parete di fondo.'

Thank you, Nicola.
The subject matter is local to Sardinia and that probably explains the literal translation. Indeed, I could not find any evidence of this term being used outside the island.
Have a nice day.
