I managed to receive more information from my client who told me that they were wrought iron lantern holders on the corners of buildings....so although Tom's was quite close, I think your suggestion was better.

try this. I'm saying "holders" because presumably, this being the 17th. century, there were no lamps as such, but only holders for lamps.
