Is this copertura to be translated as "covering" or "roofing" in this context? To be honest, I'm rather confused!

This is probably the roof of the main part of the theatre, in which case roof of the theatre is probably more appropriate under which you will find the auditorium and the stage. Otherwise roof of the auditorium. Either way the "copertura" is the roof, rather than "roofing" which would indicate the type of roofing material.
