Italian to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Architecture / History of excavations of Herculaneum
Italian term or phrase:in sottosquadro
Tav 90 – Reintegrazione e consolidamento delle murature in opera incerta in ** sottosquadro **. A sinistra, Casa del Colonnato Toscano (VI, 16, 17, 18, 26, 27); a destra, Casa del Salone Nero (VI, 11,13). Foto Emanuela Sorbo.
Foto Emanuela Sorbo.
I've selected the wrong one by mistake. In the end I used "sottosquadro technique" and put something similar Neptunia'a explanation in brackets using the word recesses.
All I've seen regarding this term is the decorative technique of the same, which sounds a bit like creating a mosaic, and some descriptions which sound like patchwork. Too bad the photos are not helpful! I dont know if this would be helpful either, you many have seen it already: http://www.ilgiornaledellarchitettura.com/articoli/2009/10/1...

recessed
Explanation: I think they are talking about a restoration technique in which the restored area is not level with the surface but rather recessed. This allows the viewer to see the "fake" areas and not get confused with the original. Recessed might not be the only way to describe it but I can't think of anything better just now! Does this make sense with the images?

Asker: I considered that myself, but I'm just guessing really.
Asker: The photos I have don't really help, unfortunately.

back drafts
In situ remain fragments of thinner slabs, in back draft as to the main decoration, fluted with glyphs, almost like columns, which contour the eastern door that leads to the ambulatio porticata, equally paved with marble polychrome tarsia.'

seems that in that case the translation worked...
Anyway "undercut" is another option...

…..Irregularly finned precast panels hovering over a transparent undercut create a detailed texture along the length of this narrow street, and the effect is intensified by oblique angle views…..

Asker: Hi Stefina. The Garzanti dictionary gives undercut and backdraft, but little else. Your reference is a not very good translation.
Asker: What I need is to see the use of the terms by a US or UK architect.
