Italian to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / mostra
Italian term or phrase: 10 opere inedite
Its the title. The glossary gives "previously unexhibited works", which gives the meaning, but doesn't generate the same suspense as the Italian. Any one got any brilliant ideas? In a text I usually translate with something like "for the first time" or "never seen before", but these seem a bit wordy and not right for a title.

Clarification request(s) and response
Mary Stefan: 6:14pm Oct 10, 2006: Hi James,

I suppose it's about an art exhibition and I would go with your translation: "ten unexhibited works". It might not "generate the same suspense as the Italian term" but it is short and precise and, so far, it sounds the best.

Mary
Mary Stefan: 6:39pm Oct 10, 2006: If it's not about an art exhibition Giovanni's translation is very good.
James (Jim) Davis: 2:48am Oct 11, 2006: A big thank you to everybody! - Wow, I didn't expect such a fantastic response. thank you everybody. Your answers, have confirmed what I had always suspected, that there is no firm cognate for inedito in English, which means there are dozens of different ways to translate it according to the context.
James (Jim) Davis: 2:52am Oct 11, 2006: Oh it is an art exhibition.
Mary Stefan: 3:01am Oct 11, 2006: James, since it is indeed an art exhibition I would say stick with "unexhibited". "Unpublished" works better with books, articles etc.
Giovanni Guarnieri MITI, MIL: 5:12am Oct 11, 2006: yes, Mary, I agree. If it's an art exhibition, then unpublished doesn't apply.

10 fresh works

Explanation:
Personally, I think that "previously unshown/unexhibited" sounds right in a title too.
However, if you really want another option, I think "fresh" might just fit the bill.
Good luck with it!

unprecedented works

Explanation:
I've used "unprecedented" for "inedite" before, but this only works here if the style of these new works isn't like the style of previous works. It doesn't work if they just want to say that these particular works haven't been shown yet.

Wow. I suppose you couldn't put "10 horrific new works"? Drawing from Patricia's suggestion, perhaps you could turn the phrase around and talk about this being the "gallery debut" or "exhibition debut" of these (10) works.

Asker: Thanks Anna, Unfortunately, its not the case (but I'll keep it for the future). The style is the same. These works are so horrific that the artist didn't have the courage to show them before, but his style hasn't changed.

Explanation:
SO che sembra un po' naive , però... suppongo che "ten previously unreleased works" sia troppo verboso, per i tuo gusti.

James, I'm lost again. But I tell you this, in italian I don't think '10 opere inedite' has any suspence at all. It's quite a common sentence with nothing special about it. Now the question is: what are you looking for, exactly, AND is is it worthwhile? ;)

Asker: Sono anni che cerco qualcosa di veramente 'inedita' per tradurre questa parola. Non cerco un modo non pubblicato in precedenza. If you see what I mean.

Asker: New works is a good idea, but unfortunately these are 10 -15 years old, but just haven't been seen before.

Asker: Yep It is going to get a lot of attention, numbers and important people. Anyway it has to be out by tomorrow. But I partly put the question up because its one of those problem words which has no direct synonym in English. I thing "inedito" is very common, but when you say something is "inedito" you are saying it is special in some way. To simply say it is not shown before, is not to say it is special in any way.

Asker: Thank you Giovanni

Unveiled (for the first time)

Explanation:
Sounds like something revelated...if you think it can suits the case. I think it can be a nice way to describe something that has never been shown.

As somone already said, inedito is not such a special word. I'd say that its a very normal adjective to describe something that has never been ..published..shown.. whatever, that's all. This is why I chose unveiled, to put into the "event" a bit more of suspance. I guess its all a matter of taste.
