Context: Essay on the work of the painter and sculptor Giacomo Manzoni (Manzù).

Thanks everyone. I should have explained that I understood the 'broken' 'fragmented' bit but couldn't seem to come up with a natural sounding phrase for the whole (scomposti nelle note fondamentali) ... and I still can't!

Explanation: I don't think you can follow in English what seems to be a musical metaphor in Italian, where "toni" (di colore, oppure suono) are followed by "note" (musical notes one imagines, unless note is intended in the philsophical sense of the defining properties).
