Italian term or phrase: scomposti nelle note fondamentali
Context: Essay on the work of the painter and sculptor Giacomo Manzoni (Manzù).

Sentence:

Modigliani, comunque, non fu il solo modello a cui Manzù si rivolse nel corso di quegli ann i[...] Accadde, ad esempio, che la vocazione lineare si sposasse, nelle pitture, ad un gusto coloristico di ascendenza matissiana. Thanks, Oliver. I think this is perhaps the best solution but I would like to thank Jim and Stefina for their valid suggestions too.

neutral  James (Jim) Davis: Isn't it better to quote original English rather than a translation, or at least to cite the source, which seems a fair translation?

Explanation:
I don't think you can follow in English what seems to be a musical metaphor in Italian, where "toni" (di colore, oppure suono) are followed by "note" (musical notes one imagines, unless note is intended in the philsophical sense of the defining properties).

I know this doesn't quite catch all the nuances of the Italian, but as a native English speaker I am certain it is very natural sounding English:
