Sounds like its part of a large telescope structure. Its where the mechanisms and machinery are housed.

Alexander Chisholm (asker): 1:21pm Apr 29, 2003: more - it a figure legend referring to a large telescope construction, and the vault celeste is where the mechanism etc is housed.

And FWIW, I would say a simple \"sky\" is more commonly used to refer to the \"vault of heaven\" when describing what a telescope can see. \"Vault of heaven\" tends to used in more poetic contexts (or in transaltions from Italian...).
