Italian to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Automotive / Cars & Trucks / racing cars
Italian term or phrase: autocarri
"Vittorio era ormai totalmente impegnato nell'attività commerciale, in quella sportiva, nella trasformazione di telai di autocarri piccoli e medi e nella produzione di banchi prova motore."

I'm confused because up to now the text has dealt exclusively with racing cars, yet my understanding is that "autocarri" are normally vans or lorries - in any case vehicles used for work/transportation purposes. Any suggestions gratefully received.

lorries / trucks
Explanation:
lorries (BR) - truck (AM) which I think you know, but that's it. autocarro is nothing else. See from De Mauro online:
au|to|càr|ro
s.m.
AU autoveicolo per il trasporto di merci, costituito da una cabina di guida e da un cassone di carico: a. a cassone aperto, a cassone ribaltabile

well, if you can use the American term, which is well known in the whole English speaking world anyway, I think it'd sound better, because it gives you a wider range of vehicles than lorry, so it sounds better in 'small and medium trucks'

Commercial vehicles

Explanation:
Autocarro can also apply to cars as well as trucks (my own car is registered as autocarro) Commercial vehicles is a commonly used term in English which covers the same category of vehicles as autocarro.

neutral Isabel Booth: You're right of course, but I think the 'telai' clue leads more to lorries
