I need a second opinion on the translation for "letalizzare". Context is below:

"L’ utilizzo di feeder layer a base di fibroblasti murini come supporto di crescita delle colture cellulari di cheratinociti presuppone un processo di inattivazione delle cellule costituenti il feder layer stesso prima del loro impiego in coltura, ovvero un trattamento preliminare, di tipo fisico o chimico, in grado di letalizzare le cellule di fibroblasto entro un tempo definito e noto,rendendole incapaci di duplicazione cellulare.
Safety: La presenza nel tessuto da trapiantare di fibroblasti residui provenienti dal feeder layer e geneticamente diversi dall’ organismo ospite e non completamente disattivati,ovvero ancora in grado di andare incontro a replicazione cellulare viene definita “microchimerismo”.
Suitability: La presenza nel substrato di coltura cellulare in vitro di fibroblasti attivi non è compatibile con lo sviluppo della coltura di cheratinociti, in quanto i fibroblasti entrano in competizione favorevole di crescita con i cheratinociti prendendo il sopravento su di essi e distruggendoli.
Per poter esplicare la loro funzione di substrato di crescita per i cheratinociti i fibroblasti debbono trovarsi, per un periodo di tempo definito e sufficiente allo sviluppo della coltura dei cheratinociti stessi, in una situazione per così dire “pre agonica” durante la quale i fibroblasti sono ancora metabolicamente attivi e quindi in grado di secernere i necessari fattori di stimolazione di proliferazione cellulare, ma non sono in grado di duplicarsi."

Would "deactivate" be a good translation for "letalizzare" because essentially the cells are deactivated so that they cannot reproduce anymore? I haven't found enough examples of "lethalise" (lethalize) to convince me that using a literal translation would be good here, but there are many examples on Google that show that "cell lethality" is used in biology publications/terminology. So if "lethality" is used, could I use "lethalise" or would it be better to use "deactivate" in this specific context.

Asker: Thank you for your answer. This could have also been an option, but I found more examples of "deactivating cells" than "neutralising cells" although this would have also conveyed the meaning I believe. Thank you!

Explanation:
It seems that the Italian word is a calque from English, even if the SX -izzare is pretty productive in Italian, think about a word like 'metabolizzare'.
The term is a specification, it means 'gassare'.
Nowdays young people use 'gasare' (variant with one 's') with the meaning of 'elettrizzare'.
In this context means:
"To put to death by placing in a 'lethal chamber' (camera della morte)". I would rather leave 'lethalize'.
