Italian term or phrase: continuum cotonale
I don't have even the faintest idea what this may mean. Don't think it may be related to cotton, however here's the original sentence:
"La consistente ricchezza di biotopi, nonostante la limitata estensione dell’area, evidenzia una varietà di ambienti (delle spiagge, dei calanchi, dei trubi, dei gessi, dei torrenti e dei pantani) che a fronte di una riduzione del disturbo antropico darebbero origine ad un continuum di tipo cotonale."
Once again, the text is about vegetation distribution in the Southern coast of Sicily

ecotonal
Explanation:
e·co·tone (k-tn, k-)
n.
A transitional zone between two communities containing the characteristic species of each.

This is from a dictionary. I also found ecotonal | cotonal on the web but still don't know whether cotonal and ecotonal have different meanings.

It seems that the "e" may be deleted, but ecotonal seems to be more standard and descriptive.

agree  Alessandra Renna: You're right! It's the same: "caratteristiche tipiche dell'ambiente cotonale, di transizione tra lo spazio boscato e quello aperto del campo coltivato nel quale si verificano le migliori condizioni per la biodiversità"
