Botany / names of people and places
Italian term or phrase: "da Verrone nato nel 116 a.c."
We are talking about a Walnut (NOCE) tree here...The complete sentence is this: "La più antica memoria sulla cultivazione in Italia è quella rammentata da Verrone nato nel 116 a.c."

I can't seem to figure out if Verrone is refering to a place (city in the region of Piedmont) or a person ( no-one by that name comes up in my search). BUT it's the preposition "da" that throws me off if we are talking about a place...any suggestions???

Verrone born in 116 b.c.

Explanation:
How would the city of Verrone be born in 116 b.c., and how would it remember something? And besides Verrone exists as an Italian family name.
