Italian term or phrase: specie vegetali interrate con il fusto
"valutazione dell’attecchimento delle specie vegetali interrate con il fusto poste nelle opere di ingegneria naturalistica."

Can anyone tell me whether this refers to the planting of saplings or smaller plants? Or is there some other shade of meaning?

I'm looking over a previous translation and they use "stemmed species" - sounds funny to me, as though it's missing an adjective (short stemmed, etc) so here I am with my question.

... sapling(s) planting
Explanation:
I think it's definitely saplings they are talking about here, and I suppose they are mostly trees, since you mentioned mountainsides...

Tree-specific info - whether they are standard (alto fusto) or half standard (mezzo fusto) trees, or other vegetable species (bushes, for instance) - are probably stated elsewhere in your text.

HTH,
Barbara

Without the benefit of the full context, it looks like this might refer to a specialized transplanting process, where one first dips the stem of the cutting into rooting hormone, then plants pat of the actual stem. I don't think it can be translated as "seedling," at least from what my own green thumb experience tells me, seedlings still don't really have a full stem yet. They are just still stringy and wobbly babies :)

Alternatively, they may be talking about nightshade plants (like tomatoes) that when you transplant them into a -- say -- veggie bed, the more of the stem you plant into the ground, the hardier the plant will grow (unlike other plants that need to be repotted paying great attention to the level of the soil in the new pot -- where it falls around the old stem).

yup, if it is a whole mountainside (not obvious from the original post) that they are working on, then definitely it would not be seedlings/cuttings ... Sounds to me, then, that this is a reforestation procedure of some sort. :)

Notes to answerer
Asker: I said saplings, not seedlings - and they're talking about replanting whole mountainsides. So even cuttings seems a bit far fetched - what do you think?
