A specimen is an ornamental plant that serves as a focal point in a garden, lawn, or indoor landscape. Specimens are most often isolated in an open space rather than being grouped in a bed. If your answer is selected, you are sometimes (used to be always, but doesn't seem to be any more) invited to enter it and add it to your own glossary.
Hi Rachel, I had already entered this term in the glossary when I closed the question, so I don't know why the system prompted you to do so, too...however, I don't know what plant it is, it is some kind of ornamental plant for - a show! thanks for your help
Hi Claudia, I didn't change your entry, I just "glossed" the term specimen plant when invited to do so. However, maybe show plant is better - more context would help to decide it - what kind of plant are they talking about, what type of document is it?
Thanks to all the contributors, very interesting answers. In fact, I added Mr Murray's option to the glossary because I think it would also work, in context
