@ Paul, The form present in the link that you provided says "...that subsequent to his/her passing the examination, he/she has attended satisfactorily during two terms the courses of lectures arranged by the University..." IMHO the satisfactorily can be understood as 'profitto' ..
the job of the english translator is to copy word for word from bureaucratic repetitions and useless additional information and that this is justified by "melius abbundare quam deficere" is, in my opinion, incorrect.
yes, giovanni, but that's the complete opposite of what is demanded from good english, namely, conceptual and linguistic CONCISION. i would even suggest that good italian also requires this approach. but to suggest, at any rate, that

Pls, stop the long dispute! What is the certificate date? Old forms were reformed in the Italian School. Pauley's observations are logical, but according to old Italian burocratical style, they say in Latin" melius abbundare quam deficere" in words.

what a "positive" grade is. if you need an A in biology to get into medical school, then is a B positive or negative? your original italian sentence is overwordy. as i see it the translation woudl be something like:
if he passed then he was successful. a certificate is objective: it doesn't enter into the merits or demerits of the grades. for that you need a reference from your department head, thoughh an employer will have his/her own idea of
yes, lindsay, but it says quite explicitly that he "superò i seguenti esami". he passed the exams. on a cert there would no be a comment as to the positive or negative nature of the results, as what's good or bad depends on the type of placement you want.
Hi Pauley, I also asked my husband about the meaning of "esami di profitto" and, like Giovanni, he said that "profitto" means the results were positive.
