Italian term or phrase: arrivate alla terza generazione

Le macchine del nostro data center erano arrivate alla terza generazione e cominciavano a evidenziare problemi di capienza

The excerpt is taken from a text describing a project to install a new data centre. Here, the company’s IT guy is explaining why they needed to replace their existing data centre; he’s obviously saying that their equipment was getting old, but for me ‘third generation’ means it’s quite new (e.g. 3G mobile phones). How can outdated equipment be ‘arriving at the third generation’? Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

University of the third age

try this. I think he means the old machines had been upgraded 3 time with extra RAM etc but were now at the end of their useful lfe.

Explanation:
Just to throw yet another spanner in the works, I hear this in the sense not of third upgrade, but behind current technology by two generations. In this sense, yes, it could well be given simply as "aging" or "elderly", but the quantifier locates the age of the systems more precisely.

In particular I do not hear it in the sense of 3G; that is a wireless communication cell technology, and without much more specific coupling of this data center to wireless comm I do not see that it fits.
