Italian to English translations [PRO] Medical - Cosmetics, Beauty | | Italian term or phrase: asportabilità | Regarding a moisturizing cleanser, the producer writes: "[Il detergente] ha un basso profilo di asportabilità con una minor rimozione dal sito di applicazione e possibilità di prolungare l’attività locale di protezione."
I understand what it means, but can't find the proper term in English.
Please: do not suggest "removability." I'm looking for *alternatives* inasmuch as I've already done the research to demonstrate to my satisfaction that "removability" seems rarely to be used in native-English materials regarding surfactants/cleansers. Likewise, please don't offer websites that are translated from English or written in ESL.
I'm hoping to find the equivalent concept in native English materials. Many thanks for your help. |

1 hr confidence: moisture locking
Explanation: Not sure if you could adapt it, but this is what one of the leading brands of moisturising products says about their intensive range. They also talk of it "forming a protective barrier", which is what your product seems to do. Hope it is of some help...

Understood, I thought of "shielding properties" too...I found the following sentence on a site for "Gloves in a Bottle": ""Shielding lotions don't wash or rub off," agrees Dr. Zogg. "Because a shielding lotion stays on and protects the skin it’s a very effective treatment for the dry skin conditions we see here in the winter months."
Shielding properties could encompass the other ones you mentioned, aside from moisturising. :-)

Asker: Thanks Chiara. I think we're on the right track, but moisture-locking doesn't work for all the other properties of which the product boasts (antioxidant, antibacterial, etc.) For the moment I'm thinking "removal resistance," which means reversing the concept. A product with "bassa" asportabilita' has "alta" removal-resistance.

Asker: Nope, it's not quite long-lasting. If anything, it would be "lastingness." A product can have either high asportabilità (i.e., is short-lasting) or low asportabilità (i.e., is long-lasting), but in any case the issue isn't durability over time but resistance to being washed/worn away/removed.

52 mins confidence: peer agreement (net): +3 long-lasting moisturing effect
Explanation: Hi Wendell,
I don't find the source text particularly clear; it seems to imply that the cleanser is not easily removed, which sounds rather unappealing.
I wouldn't bet my bottom euro on it, but I think what they mean is that the product has a long-lasting moisturising and protective effect, which doesn't wash away with the make-up and dirt once the cleanser is removed. It might help if you tell us in what manner the cleanser is removed (washed away with water, removed with cotton pads and toner, whatever).

I think the only way you can get round this is to somehow separate the two functions, so that it's clear that what stays is the benefit, i.e. the moisturising/emollient ingredients, and not the actual cleanser, which is supposed to - ehm - cleanse. Can't see how it can do that unless you can remove the dirt... Presumably the beneficial ingredients are formulated in such a way as to penetrate in-depth, while an easy-to-remove component gets rid of superficial impurities (?).

How about "staying power"? Found a few ghits:
Some ingredients that work as evaporation blockers do double duty as emollients which keep the skin smooth. But evaporation blockers are often greasy. There are less greasy variants but they usually have less **staying power** than their greasy counterparts.

Oil has a bit more staying power than the average moisturizer does, and it will prevent moisture from evaporating off of your skin [source: Mayo Clinic].

...Mascara and lipstick come right off and leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized. It's main ingredient is mineral oil rather than petroleum jelly, therefore, it liquefies quickly and turns into an almost baby oil-like consistency.
... Because of its petroleum base, it has wonderful **staying power** and is so silky to the touch. ...

Ooops, ... typo:
as Potra rightly pointed out, that should be "long lasting **moisturising** effect" of course
sorry

Asker: Hi, Sarah. This concept of asportabilità comes up several times in the text. Basically, they seem to be saying that it's a *good* thing if the moisturing/emollient ingredients in the product don't "asportare" because then they stay in place longer to continue providing their benefits. I thought of something like "resists easy removal," but then it begins to sound like a negative characteristic -- once you get this stuff on you, it'll never come off!
