Jim, it's a moot point now, as this question has been closed. Yes, of course, the terms "government intervention" and "interventionism" are common in English for the uses you indicate. No disagreement there, although I would point out that the source sentence here does not actually talk directly of "intervento di governo". My comment about the use of the word "intervention" in English was mostly to clarify for the asker why I had chosen to rephrase the source sentence, and that was basically to provide what I still believe is a more natural (though not the only possble) rendition in English. Much of what in Italian are described as "interventi" or "manovre" are better rendered in English as "rescue plans", "austerity measures", "stimulus packages" and so on, without needing to go anywhere near the word "intervention".

I would almost never use it with an indefinite article (it is knowm as an "uncountable noun"). Obciously most Italian uses of "intervento" are something different in English like a surgical operation in hospital. However, the word comes into its prime in English with "government intervention" and especially with economics as the contrary to "laissez faire" economics. It is seen by the latter school as interference, which taken to extremes becomes communism.

my answer stands. The building industry was stimulated to lift Italy out of recession, not that it seemed to have a great effect.
