Explanation:
In the US and Canada, at least, the specialized exams for graduate students in their particular fields are the comprehensive examinations, or typically just "comps". It is my understanding that the Italian laurea is more the equivalent of a master's degree than a bachelor's degree, so the term would seem to fit.
