Tutte queste caratteristiche facevano del volume un ottimo candidato come libro di lettura e di premio nelle scuole in un secolo in cui l’editoria scolastica, in linea con gli obiettivi di “istruzione del popolo” posti dalle élites dirigenti, conobbe grandi mutamenti.

agree  LorraineB: I see no reason for NOT translating this phrase ... Susy's ref may be from the 1930s-40s, but I was at school several decades later and we still had Prize Books (though some choice in high school, at primary school 'they' decided what you would read!

"L’art. 53 del Regolamento 15 settembre 1860 prevedeva la distribuzione di 'libri di premio o attestazioni di merito agli allievi che sarannosi segnalati per istudio, per diligenza e per costumatezza'. Non era quindi sufficiente aver ottenuto ottime votazioni, era necessario anche aver dato prova di impegno, buona volontà, costanza e di aver tenuto un comportamento rispettoso verso tutti. [...]
Durante l’ottocento il libro di premio veniva quasi sempre rilegato appositamente: una solida copertina telata, impressa a caratteri d’oro, lo rendeva inconfondibile e solenne, quasi più un oggetto da guardare che da sfogliare. Il Museo dell’Educazione raccoglie diversi esempi di questi libri. Tra tutti ne segnalo uno che più di ogni altro interpreta questa idea di libro come palpabile e duratura testimonianza di virtù. Sul dorso del libro manca ogni riferimento al titolo e all'autore e campeggiano le parole 'Lode allo studio e buona condotta', incitamento ad impegni futuri. In età giolittiana l’uso delle rilegature andò scomparendo, ma il libro rimase il dono per sugellare l’impegno di un anno scolastico."
