Tech/Engineering - Engineering: Industrial
Italian term or phrase: bivalenti in ripresa
The context is a technical specification regarding the stockyards of a steelworks. The main problem is the word "bivalenti", which appears frequently in relation with the conveyor belts taking materials to and from the stockyards. Below are a few examples:

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

Clarification request(s) and response
rfmoon: 11:41pm Oct 18, 2007: Hi sarahca, I would interpret "messa a parco" as parcheggiata, in other words, stopped (like a parked car) instead of moving forward (in this case)
:o)

bi-directional forward moving conveyors
Explanation:
in ripresa usually means that something has picked up,is in a upward trend. In this case I think it means that the conveyor is loaded, picking up stuff and moving forward, or even forward and upwards (instead of backwards, which being bi-directional they can also do)
Note that a bi-directional conveyor can also be one that is actually two belts running side by side, but driven by a single shaft..this link shows what I am talking about

In an assembly line situation (see second link) bi-directional conveyors can be used for sorting purposes (separare un prodotto da un altro, vagliare)
Good luck!

Thanks very much for your help and sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you but it was a huge translation and I was still making up my mind. In the end I discovered the the correct term in this particular context is Reclaimer. (ie. Stacker Reclaimer machines - hence bivalente)

dual/ multi purpose (machine/ machinery)

Explanation:
Just an idea; here is a website which is in English and Italian - it has an image of a multi-purpose laminator which is refered to as an "accopiatrice bivalente". click on the link and then choose Italian version and look for "macchine speciali".

Asker: That's really helpful, thanks very much! Just one point to mention. The opposite of the "in ripresa", mentioned elsewhere in the text is "messa al parco", could it therefore be "bi-directional return conveyors" in the case of "in ripresa"? If so, I'm still at a loss for "messa al parco", but perhaps I'll ask another question for that...
