The main problem is the word "bivalenti", which appears frequently in relation with the conveyor belts taking materials to and from the stockyards. Below are a few examples:
"Ripresa dei materiali (Impegno delle bivalenti in ripresa)"
Detti materiali sono messi a parco e successivamente ripresi con macchine **bivalenti**, serventi quattro semiparchi aventi le seguenti dimensioni.
Nel parco “Minerali”, le zone di “trailer” delle **bivalenti** sono riservate ai fini di ritorno dalla vagliatura della StockHouse.

in ripresa usually means that something has picked up,is in a upward trend. In this case I think it means that the conveyor is loaded, picking up stuff and moving forward, or even forward and upwards (instead of backwards, which being bi-directional they can also do)
Note that a bi-directional conveyor can also be one that is actually two belts running side by side, but driven by a single shaft..this link shows what I am talking about

In an assembly line situation (see second link) bi-directional conveyors can be used for sorting purposes (separare un prodotto da un altro, vagliare)

| Note from asker to answererThanks very much for your help and sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you but it was a huge translation and I was still making up my mind. In the end I discovered the the correct term in this particular context is Reclaimer. (ie. Stacker Reclaimer machines - hence bivalente)

Asker: That's really helpful, thanks very much! Just one point to mention. The opposite of the "in ripresa", mentioned elsewhere in the text is "messa al parco", could it therefore be "bi-directional return conveyors" in the case of "in ripresa"? If so, I'm still at a loss for "messa al parco", but perhaps I'll ask another question for that...
