any formal/technical way of saying 'paint job'? It is for a medical device, and how an incorrect 'paint job' could compromise the way it wroks

Explanation:
If paint is not applied properly

or something along the lines of "if the paint process is not performed properly". You might want to substitue "has been" in place of "is" depending on the fuller context.
