In totale l'asta fluviale ha uno sviluppo di 241 Km, mentre l'asse della valle risulta più corto di 18 Km; questa differenza è dovuta ai numerosi meandri che il fiume forma, specie nel tratto terminale, tra le confluenze dell'Era e Pesa.
Caratteristiche morofologiche
I terreni pianeggianti e cioè con pendenza inferiore al 15% misurano 1.410 Km2 pari al 17% dell'intera superficie. Poco inferiore è la percentuale di terreni di media ed alta montagna, mentre fortemente predominante è la parte del territorio classificabile come collinare.
Le pendenze del fiume, calcolate sull'asta principale, variano tra il 20 ed il 14%
