esondare.

National regeneration agency, English Partnerships, working in conjunction with West Northamptonshire Development Corporation, the Environment Agency and Northampton Borough Council, has started work on the first phase of the Upton Flood Attenuation Scheme. The full comprehensive attenuation strategy, costing over £8m, will enable Northampton Brownfield Initiative Sites at Sixfields, Harvey Reeves Road and Ransome Road to be regenerated and provide some further flood defence measures for Northampton as a whole.
The aim of the works is to create an area where water could be diverted from the River Nene in a controlled manner in order to reduce the risk of flooding downstream. The diverted water would be held temporarily (attenuated) upstream of the town in an area of open grassland until it could be safely released back into the river. Water would only be contained in these areas during a flood event.
