Oh, then we definitely have the right meaning. "cancelled out" disappears, doesn't appear. Italian has this special word for it, but in English there is no particular technical term. I use elimated, but there is nothing special about it. Must be late down under, I have a long 30 page Sunday ahead of me :(.

Jim, there's little more context I can add. It was a dot point under Conto Economico, referring to operating costs and the whole thing is as follows:

• l’aumento delle spese per sostegno alla ricerca, che crescono del +2,6% rispetto al 2009 e del +4.7% rispetto al 2008. il sostegno alla ricerca non è messo in luce nella sua interezza, infatti si deve tener presente che oltre 1 milione di contributi sono a carico della Società, e si elidono nel conto economico consolidato.
