Italian to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Finance (general)
Italian term or phrase:POS
This is from a list of payment methods given in a legal opinion on traceability of financial transactions. No other context except that the other payment methods are Ri.ba, RID, MAV, Bonifici bancari e postali, Cambiali ed assegni bancari etc.
I know there are a squillion entries, but this clearly isn't "point of sale".
Jim, thanks for pointing that out. I guess you're right, given the context. In this particular case the 'POS' is probably used for 'bancomat' debit card payments only.
In the context of this translation, using a pos to pay by credit card and using it to pay by debit card are two very different and separate methods of payment. My bet is that they mean bancomat debit cards, especially because credit card payment is still mainly offline and by signature.
Jim is right. We use 'POS' to mean the terminal (wired or wireless) that reads credit cards and 'bancomat' cards to make transactions in shops. This is an example of a POS terminal: http://www.multistudiomedia.net/Terminali POS.asp
Hi Maryrose. This is clearly about Italian banks. Generally these three letters, which I often translate as POS terminals, are often used to mean online debit card transaction for retail purchases. They are not ATM use of debit card. Strictly speaking separate POS terminals also exist for credit cards (different terminals are used), but when a bank uses the term POS without specification it generally means debit card and the "bancomat" debit card in particular. Basically you hand your trusty card in at the till and the person on the desk says "bancomat?" you then insert your PIN and the amount is debited directly from your account.
Actually I think it is exactly a payment through POS Point Of Sale

POS terminal manages the selling process by a salesperson accessible interface. The same system allows the creation and printing of the receipt.

Asker: Oh, I see, so it's not actually referring to any kind of bank payment at all. Now I understand! Thank you. That'll teach me to work at this hour - brain closed to taking a broader view!
