Cotton does tend to clump, so these futons need to be rotated at least once a month. Setting the mattress in the sun at least once a year also helps the cotton fibers "plump up."

Turn your mattress over twice a month for the first six months, and once a month every month thereafter. This will help to equalize wear and plump up the fillings.

to hand-tease and level out the mattress

Explanation:
or
to fluff up (the wool) and level out the mattress

This was usually performed by a 'materassaia', a mattress craftmaster.

agree  dasein_wm: I like fluff up and level out. I remember watching my wife do this with some old wool-filled pillows once and she used the verb 'cardare' to describe the action (but I don't think that's appropriate here). Fluff up for sure.

-> Thanks, I was not sure if 'fluff up' would be appropriate for corn leaves.

neutral  Helen Pringle: The matress in question was not made of feathers or cotton, but corn leaf, so teasing was necessary - IMHO

-> Hmm: Definition of 'to tease' (Chambers online): 5 to comb (wool, flax or hair, etc) to remove tangles and open out the fibres. As someone commented in potra's answer: 'cardare' (to tease) is NOT appropriate in this case: you don't 'comb' leaves.

revive the bed/mattress (or rejuvenate)

Explanation:
This is one way of sticking as close as possible to the actual verb, "rinvigorire". I think this is a suitable verb as it does not add or take away any meanings or associations other than "rinvigorire".

I found several examples of this on websites for soft furnishings or mattresses:

"How To REVIVE An Old Mattress
Not everyone wants to buy a new mattress - so how do you rejuvenate an old mattress and give it life again? Take an older piece of bedding and simply drape..."
http://www.ehow.com/how_2253674_revive-old-mattress.html

"A good plump up in the covering fabric will REVIVE the cushions back to their original look and feel."
