Italian term or phrase: volume

This word has always caused me problems, because the concept is not generally expressed in English. "Volume" in English is wrong as a translation.

Here's a typical phrase:

La pulizia delle linee si staglia su volumi solidi ed appoggiati per terra.

Maybe the clue to this is to rearrange the whole phrase as its more English "style", especially in technical specifications and things, to use fixed and standard terms, as opposed to the Italian graphic descriptive commentary style.
