English translation:I've been trying to get hold of you..
Explanation:
I've been trying to get hold of you to wish you ....
I'd imagine that the 'auguri' (wishes) are for Christmas
the 'anche' (too/also) also implies that there was another reason the person was trying to get hold of you

I was looking for you / trying to get in touch with you...

Explanation:
... to wish you season's greetings / wish you a happy birthday / congratulate you (on your promotion or something similar)
"Fare gli auguri" is a bit vague, as it could be any of the three options above. I'm sure you'll be able to choose the one that best fits your context.

"wish you Merry Xmas" is what we'd normally say. However, if we don't know who this message is for, it might be more appropriate to opt for a safer option. That is why I chose "season's greetings".
