In particolare i primi, a S, erano preposti a svolgere funzione di contenimento del terreno naturale e in vari casi declinati come mostre d’acqua;

In primi a sud refers to walls.

Is it a synomym for "corso d'acqua"?

Mostra d’acqua: nome che prendevano nell’antica Roma le fontane che avevano un impianto monumentale, costruite anche a scopo propagandistico, nel senso che erano considerate un "munus" dell’imperatore, cioè un dono al popolo. Tale denominazione sarà ripresa nel ‘600 per indicare alcune delle grandi fontane fatte realizzare da alcuni papi nella Roma barocca.

Munus: nome che Frontino dà alle trentanove mostre d’acqua esistenti a Roma ai tempi di Domiziano, che esprimeva il significato di opere pubbliche "donate" ("munus" significa dono) alla popolazione dallo Stato.

Nel 1731 Nicolò Salvi vinse il bando di papa Clemente XII per la costruzione di una grande mostra d'acqua che occupasse l'intera facciata di palazzo Poli. (Trevi Fountain)
