ABSTRACT - Carabid beetles of “Fontana Gigante” in Tricerro (Vercelli, Piedmont)
(Coleoptera, Carabidae).
“Fontana Gigante” is a wet biotope, with springs and ponds used in a recent
past for fish culture, covering an area of about 60 hectares not far from Tricerro,
in the province of Vercelli (Piedmont, Italy). Since 2000 it is a protected area on
account of its naturalistic relevance. The survey of the carabid fauna showed a to-
tal of 57 species, mostly hygrophilous elements living in the pond banks and
marshes, all of them winged or pteripolimorphic. Some valuable taxa rare or spo-
radically distributed in the areas of Northern Italy are recorded (Lasiotrechus dis-
cus, Platynus krynickii, Platysma oenotrium, Platysma gracile, Europhilus thoreyi,
Baudia peltata, Baudia dilatata). The total lack of brachypterous as well as of forest
species (with the exception of a few winged taxa) is due to the complete destruc-
tion of woodland in the past century in favour of fish culture and agriculture. The
creation of forested corridors in order to connect “Fontana Gigante” with a very
close valuable planitial forest (Bosco della Partecipanza) is highly recommended
in order to increase the biological complexity of both biotopes.
RIASSUNTO - “Fontana Gigante” è un biotopo umido, con risorgive e stagni
usati fino ad un recente passato per l’allevamento ittico, esteso su una superficie
di circa 60 ettari presso Tricerro, in provincia di Vercelli (Piemonte, Italia). Dal
2000 è un’area protetta per la sua notevole importanza naturalistica. Lo studio
della sua carabidofauna ha messo in evidenza un totale di 57 specie, per la mag-
gior parte igrofile e localizzate sulle sponde degli stagni e nelle paludi, tutte ma-
crottere o pteripolimorfe. Sono stati rinvenuti alcuni interessanti taxa a distribu-
zione rara o discontinua in Italia settentrionale (Lasiotrechus discus, Platynus kry-
nickii, Platysma oenotrium, Platysma gracile, Europhilus thoreyi, Baudia peltata,
Baudia dilatata). La totale mancanza di elementi brachitteri così come di specie di
foresta (con l’eccezione di pochi taxa macrotteri) è dovuta alla completa distruzio-
ne del manto boschivo nel secolo scorso per fare posto all’allevamento ittico e
all’agricoltura. È fortemente auspicabile la creazione di corridoi boscati che per-
mettano di collegare “Fontana Gigante” al vicino Bosco della Partecipanza, un
prezioso bosco planiziale relitto, allo scopo di incrementare la complessità biologi-
ca di entrambi i biotopi.
