grazie!

English translation:island of Chioggia
Explanation:
Thanks to Tom for his explanation of why it's "insula" rather than "isola", but I don't think this distinction is meaningful for translation purposes.

thank you phil, and thanks Tom, for both your ideas and explanations - thing is, it doesn't necessarily need to be a historic centre, I also found insula di Rialto, insula di Murano - always in the context of "risanamento" of certain areas of the lagoon.

insula (di Chioggia)
the historic centre of Chioggia

Explanation:
I would say this. If you start trying to explain to your English-speaking reader why it's called the "insula" you'll wander a long way from the main thrust of the document.

neutral  philgoddard: I'm not disagreeing, but I don't understand your answer. Could you explain it for those of us not intimately familiar with Chioggia? And why insula and not isola?

-> that is precisely why I made the suggestion above. In poche parole, Chioggia is historically one of the "Insulae Venetiae". Do you now want an explanation of what the "Insulae Venetiae" are?

neutral  James (Jim) Davis: This suggests that it is an insula, in the sense of a block in a Roman military town, when Chioggia is in fact an island. I should have put "can mean" instead of "suggest": L'insula era una tipologia edilizia che costituiva, in buona sostanza, il condomin

-> Regardless of what it may suggest, that's what it's called. Insula, in Latin, means "island".
