now is the time....
Explanation:
now is the time for a stronger Italian presence in India and also for a stronger Indian presence in Italy.

This reads awkwardly in Italian. I don't know if my suggested translation is any better. (Garbage in = garbage out)

I hope it helps anyway !

why couldn't Ciampi just have said "now is the time to intensify two-way collaboration between Italy and India"?

Maybe you should just say that !

Notes to answerer
Asker: It helps a lot. Thanks.

Asker: I understand what it means but every variant that I tried seemed to me very awkward.

Asker: But your variant is a very good one.

agree  simon tanner: maybe just 'and vice versa' to avoid long-windedness. I thought you liked brevity, Tom!

agree  texjax DDS PhD: AGREE ;-)

agree  Francesco D'Arcangeli: It's ok, but I like the original sentence, it's by no means awkward. However, we're so little used to reading good Italian that we no longer recognise a beautiful (albeit a little pompous) sentence when we see one...
