May 1981. Going to see a group play at Piazzale Lotto in Milan with 50 soldiers armed to the teeth in battle dress lined up beside the entrance. Crossing the road at a zebra crossing in the centre of Milan and noticing a soldier on the crossing holding a loaded sten gun. A sten gun is a short automatic gun designed to kill large numbers of personnel at short range. Because it is short, it is easy to "spray" bullets. In World War Two British troops were required to remove the bolt from them before entering an army camp. Putting the safety catch on was not considered safe enough. Raises my blood pressure just thinking about it. |
