Contained in the following sentence.

Il vettore della storia non è più lineare, ma circolare

The context is a comment about the decline of the "core-periphery" relationship between the West and ex-colonial countries, where the latter previously looked in one direction towards the "center" (the West).

Not sure how to render vettore here. Any help appreciated
