Italian to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - History / Test of Julio Caro Barroja, quoting Giambattista Vico
Italian term or phrase: stato ferino
The text if from a historical/anthropolgical essay written by Julio Caro Baroja in the first half of the twentieth century. He is discussing cycles of Basque history, following the model of Vico and also with reference to Vico's concept of "corso e ricorso" etc. "Stato ferino" is another concept employed by Vico.

My English translation of the sentence in question:

Yet in one respect, it could be seen as a kind of recurrence, since man once again returned to a *stato ferino."

Original Spanish:

En algo podría considerarse un modo de ricorso, en el que el hombre vuelve a caer en el *stato ferino".

I am inclined to translate the term as "brutish state." "Natural state" would be another possibility.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.
