Nel Maggio 1915 il canale fu addirittura protagonista dell’inizio della Grande Guerra con l’avanzata Italiana contrastata dagli Austriaci tramite la sua esondazione.

I found the translation *overflow* but I don't understand what it means in this context.

Esondazione è un sinonimo di straripamento, ossia il traboccare di acque sovrabbondanti che escono dagli argini o dalle rive di un fiume o di un torrente e inondano le zone poste a quote altimetriche inferiori.

Per corsi regimati l'esondazione si manifesta con l’uscita delle acque, da un corso naturale, dalla zona compresa tra i due argini; essa avviene per tracimazione o per rottura degli argini stessi. Per corsi d’acqua non regimati l’esondazione ha luogo quando le acque escono dalla loro “abituale” sede.

Explanation:
flooding equivale a inondazione, da cui il verbo to flood , ossia inondare.

Da non confondere con overflooding, che vuol dire esondazione per l'appunto o straripamento, cioè utilizzato solo per indicare l'evento per il quale le acque di un bacino o fiume straripano superandone gli argini.
