This is taken from the transcript of an interview with a doctor working in a hospital which has recently installed an image management system for x-rays, etc. The interviewer is asking about the advantages/disadvantages of the new system, and whether it allows the doctor to treat more patients. My translation follows, but what I really don't understand is the simile about the car (the part between ** **) – is it a common expression with an equivalent in English?
It's difficult to say whether or not there are more patients. It's definitely a resource which makes you… I mean, it's like a car will take you kilometers further if the road is your problem, afterwards there are physical limits which objectively limit things, because from getting the radiologist's opinion to treatment, in between there's often a lot to be done, a lot to be done. |

I don't think it's an idiomatic expression, just a comparison used to express the concept. I would see it like that and I also think you don't really need to keep kilometers in the sentence. Hope it helps a little.
