Italian to English translations [PRO]
Idioms / Maxims / Sayings / wine description
Italian term or phrase: viaggiano su onde siderali
The text is talking about a winery. The 'batterie' are ranges/selections of wines, but I have no idea what's meant by 'onde siderali'.
The only help I can give is that it's presumably a compliment, since the reviewer goes on to wax lyrical about the wines in question.

The limited useful context is: "Viaggiano ormai su onde siderali le batterie che ci presentano ogni anno XXX".

English translation:enjoy stellar success
Explanation:
I think it literally means they are riding on the crest of an exceptional wave, achieving great success. Stellar keeps in with the "star" theme.

are traveling on sidereal waves

Explanation:
In these circumstances, the two waves travel around the Earth in such a way ... the sidereal wave (lunar fraction) of period equal to a semi-sidereal day. ...

I went through a phase of buying very expensive wines. Strangely, my ability to recognise a good wine seemed to diminish as the price rose. We're probably better off dreaming about it and choosing by palate rather than price. I once remarked to a client that I could do a better translation with first hand knowledge of the product, and I got a bottle for Christmas ;-).

Asker: liked this a lot, Jim. something pop-songy about it. Could imagine it as a title of a B52s song! Unfortunately, the publication is a bit too serious to get away with it. I'd send you a bottle if I could afford it. I'd buy one for myself if I could afford it, come to that - the prices are as sky-high as the description!

a wineage daydream

Explanation:
non mi sembra abbia molto senso in italiano,,, a meno che non ci sia qualche altro riferimento nel testo, secondo me l'autore era ubriaco :) e voleva semplicemente dire che sono spaziali, nel senso di straordinarie, superlative, eccezionali...

have come to orbit on a different plane?
come from a parallel (stellar) universe?
from the outer space? (no, questo non è molto invitante...)
david bowie cantava a moonage daydream... ubriachezza per ubriachezza, io gli piazzerei qualcosa del genere :)

a sober option (if this is the only 'absurdity' in your text, and so you don't feel you should keep to it) might be something like "they take wine to another dimension/level" (or perhaps they take us?)

I'm not sure, as the italian is really weird, but I feel it has to do with quality per se, rather than with (the probably but not necessarily associated) success. "viaggiano ormai su onde siderali" non mi fa venire in mente la cresta dell'onda, ma una sorta di "salto di qualità", qualitativo appunto ("a step up the ladder", as per http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/business_commer... ?)

naturalmente la cosa migliore sarebbe chiedere all'autore... magari da sobrio ;)

Asker: imaginative, and evocative. Really liked this suggestion, but like Jim's it wasn't quite the right register for the publication in question. Thanks though!
