Italian term or phrase: "alla vigilia di"
I have a contradictory idiom and I was wondering if anyone could help me crack it...

"Alla vigilia di quella che molti esperti giudicano come la crisi economica piú grave degli ultimi anni, ogni sistema economico ha il dovere di interrogarsi sui suoi punti di forza e di debolezza."

The problem is that the book was published in 2009, well AFTER the beginning of the crisis! Normally "alla vigilia di" has a meaning of "prior to" something - here it just wouldn't make sense, weighing up your strengths and weaknesses leading up to the worst economic crisis in recent years.

Any suggestions? I have "in the aftermath" but obviously this is the opposite meaning!
