Does anyone know if there is a precise corresponding term in english for this? Is "altrui" "third party" or simply "other"? the latter doesn't seem to make sense. I'm stumped.

English translation:co-insurance [policies] with third party leading insurer
Explanation:
Rather wordy I'm afraid but I cannot see any other way to explain this for the moment. You could probably leave out "policies"

However this is co-insurance which is not the same thing as joint insurance.
See the references posted for more lengthy definitions.

My understanding here is that there are two or more insurance companies, co-insuring the risk, with one [not this one] acting as leading insurer with whom the policies are then re-insured for 90%.

Joint insurance -on the other hand- is usually a policy taken out in joint names with one insurer (ie husband & wife have a joint insurance policy for a car with one insurance co).

Only medium confidence as I am not an insurance expert, but HTH.

Explanation:
I think the delega refers to insurance contracts concluded by an agent on behalf of its principal.

Art. 9 Coassicurazione e delega.

Internationally
In the international insurance market, coinsurance refers to the joint assumption of risk between various insurers.
Coinsurance is generally widely used in the European insurance market. In this context, a common insurance contract is used and the risk is shared based on percentages between the insurance companies. Often, one insurance company will lead. When leading the insurance company will be responsible for administering various aspects of the insurance policy, such as premium, any claims and the insurance documents. In this situation, a charge is levied (termed Lead Office commission).
