Italian term or phrase: espressione di ricerca della nostra personalità
Yet another piece about the recession (yawn).

"Penso che la crisi abbia condizionato tutti i consumatori indipendentemente da quanto ne siano stati colpiti direttamente, generando un senso di difficoltà psicologica che incide sugli acquisti. I beni di lusso come l'abbigliamento, intesi come **espressione di ricerca della nostra personalità** e non più solo come status symbol, sono ovviamente penalizzati."

I'm not sure I get what the writer means by the phrase between asterisks. Anything I come up with doesn't really make sense.
All help appreciated

Thanks in advance

English translation:expression of our inner self/selves
Explanation:
the 'ricerca' strikes me as redundant and verbose. It's all pretty abstract anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about cutting it - I don't feel there's any loss in meaning, at least in this context.
As for the self/selves, self gets a lot more hits, but selves still reaps a hefty 48,000. Grammatically speaking, I reckon they both work, for different reasons

Thanks Simon and everyone who answered. "Ricerca" was putting me off, as it is wont to do, particularly in a fashion/design context. "Expression of our inner self/selves" is perfect. Must remember that excuse next time I feel guilty about splashing out on a pair of jimmy choos ;)

Explanation:
I think some words are put in the wrong order..
... generating a sense of psychological difficulty which affects purchases.
Luxury goods such as clothing, shown by research to be an expression of our personality, and not just a status symbol, are obviously affected.

an expression of self-discovery

Explanation:
i think.

i don't reckon there's any research been going on, more the writer is talking about the search for one's own personality and its expression through clothes.

expression of our personal identity

Explanation:
Because "expression of our search for our personal identity" adds little and subtracts much in terms of readability.
