Italian term or phrase: si favoleggia
"***Si favoleggia*** della grande quantità di olio della Spagna, ma sappiamo che il 50% dell’olio spagnolo è olio lampante deodorizzato"

Is the set-phrase "Rumour has it that.." appropriate in this context ?

English translation:Much speculation exists about.../There is much speculation about...
Explanation:
If you want to use "rumour", you could reformulate along the lines of "Rumours abound about..." but this is really more about speculation than rumour.

The suggestions by others that involve "tale(s)" also look decent.

They talk a good line

Explanation:
As in:

They talk a good line about how much oil Spain produces, but we all know that..."

This is a more colloquial alternative.
