Italian to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Journalism / evento culturale
Italian term or phrase: lettura ad alta voce
Una biblioteca organizza alcuni eventi, tra cui "due mattinate di lettura ad alta voce per bambini".

"story telling" for childrens può andare?

Continuo a pensare all'immagine di Bush o Obama che leggono le storie ai bambini, ma non riesco a focalizzare come si chiama questo "evento"...

Grazie!

English translation:story readings
Explanation:
I'd say.
This aims to embody both the ideas of 'out loud' and of reading from a text, as opposed to spontaneous oral compositions.

disagree  xxxMr Murray: We don't know if they're stories being read - they could be recipes. Anyhow, this might work in this case - but in general, "ad alta voce" doesn't mean readings. Leaving "ad alta voce" as "story readings" in the glossary would be wrong.

reading aloud

Explanation:
In British English it's generally aloud

And what better way is there to combine silent reading skills with listening and speaking than reading out loud (as we American say) or aloud (as the British say)?

-> Yes, I agree with Ryan... I think Oliver's option is the best in this case.

disagree  katiadegennaro: you don't need to point out it's "loud"
3 hrs
-> Didn't you read my reply to Carly? Btw, 'loud' is NOT the same as 'aloud/out loud'.

reading out loud

Explanation:
If I understand correctly.

--------------------------------------------------

If someone asks someone else to read something "ad alta voce" - it means the opposite of reading it to themself. "ad alta voce" on its own doesn't mean 'sing the words' - 'rap the words' ... "ad alta voce" - using a phrasal verb, not an adverb, is to do the action 'read out' + 'loud'...putting "ad alta voce" in the ProZ glossary as something else would simply cause confusion later.

disagree  Colin Ryan: Um... it's a story-reading for children at a public library. It kind of HAS to be out loud, don't you think?
6 mins
-> Well, stories could be told in pictures, mime, sign language, film, with shadow puppets, photographs (they speak a thousand words), ... So, no, I don't think is HAS to be out loud.

storytime

Explanation:
I take my two children to the local library for "storytime" once a week.

You could make it sound a lot more natural in English by switching the sentence around a little and writing something along the lines of "children's storytime two mornings a week"

The Read-Aloud Handbook
I am delighted that the sixth edition of The Read-Aloud Handbook is now available. "The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success is reading aloud to children." That quotation is from "Becoming a Nation of Readers," a national report by the Commission on Reading, However, even knowing its importance, many parents, grandparents, teachers, principals, and other educators need guidance as to the "why," "how," and "what" of reading aloud to a child.
