as an adjective contraddittorio>inconsistent .. as a noun contraddittorio>cross-examination... it really depends on the whole sentence though

il contraddittorio cannot possibly be "cross examination" because the case was still at the pleadings stage. I am awarding 2 points for providing a framework if not a solution.
