If it's only one person, and it's not a question of repeated questions and answers, you might preface the whole statement with the tried and true "declares as follows".

Thank you for your opinions Michael & Wendell - I thought this might be the case. As it is only one person making the statement, I might just omit it, because as you say, repeating it is a bit 'deadly'! Always worth throwing it out there and checking anyway. Much appreciated.

There is another translation proposed: "when asked replied," which works but seems deadly if you have to repeat it over and over. I'm assuming there's the name of the witness first? In which case, could you do something like this -- "MELISSA STANFIELD (replying):"? At least in the US, as far as I know, there's not a standard equivalent, because depositions aren't reported in that way. Couldn't say about UK or the rest of the anglofone world....

Hi Melissa. IMHO it is unlikely that there is an "established English equivalent" for this sort of formula. "In response to questioning" (or the like) is probably the best way to handle the issue.
