Asker: I'd never thought it might be a number rather than a letter. Yes, that does seem a distinct possibility. I'll wait a bit to see if someone has another idea, but this is very helpful, thank you.

Explanation:
This is only a possibility: I think it could be an abbreviation for Parte 1, (using the roman numeral I instead of 1). I've deduced this from the web page shown (marriage banns published by the Comune di Taranto) in which P.I, P. II, Parte I and Parte II are all used in the same context.
