I did actually plumb for this in the end, even though it doesn't really seem to translate across well in terms of marrying up with any UK Policing equivalent. Perhaps Jim's soluition was closer to home, but I just used the literal translation in the end. Chris.

warrant officer


Explanation:
Military ranks are hellish to translate. However, as essentially the highest class of NCOs, warrant officer will be the closest you can get I think.

By the way I wouldn't worry about the fact that warrant officer is a military term even though the duties of the Italian equivalent are civilian, as the Carabinieri is essentially a military formation.

Chief superintendent UK / Sergeant/lieutenant US


Explanation:
Looking at the ranks of the Italian Polizia di Stato this rank is almost the highest non commissioned officer level. UK and US police don't seem to make a commissioned/not commissioned officer distinction and have fewer ranks. However in the UK, it would seem to be chief superintendent and in the US Sergeant would seem to be around the mark or Lieutenant, although that suggests the idea of a commissioned officer.

Nell'Arma dei Carabinieri, il maresciallo aiutante ha la qualifica di sostituto ufficiale di pubblica sicurezza (s.u.p.s.), qualifica non attribuita al parigrado della Finanza. Dal punto di vista "uniformologico" da questo grado in su i carabinieri perdono la classica "striscia rossa" dei pantaloni utilizzata dai sottufficiali dell'Arma.

"A fifth position, called Ispettore Superiore S.U.P.S., where the achronym stands for Sostituto Ufficiale di Pubblica Sicurezza ("Special Inspector - Substitute Public Safety Commissioned Officer"), is used to designate those Inspectors which can act as substitutes to Commissioners in the chain of command under certain situations, or in Police detachments that are too small to require the presence of a Commissioner; when this happens, the officer is named Ispettore Superore - Sostituto Commissario ("Special Inspector - Substitute Commissioner")."
