Italian term or phrase: Importanza prodotti-civetta
Used in marketing discussion for food industry
English translation:see below
The "prodotti civetta" are products used to attract customers, who would then buy other items as well. In many supermarkets you can see "prodotti civetta" such as products of well-known brands which are sold at a lower price, with very little profit, on the assumption that customers will pay no attention to prices of other items.
The civetta (little owl) is famous for its singing which attracts other birds.

"importance of loss leaders"
As Laura has implied, a "loss leader" is a product that is offered at an attractively low price, primarily to draw customers into a store and, of course, continue their shopping after having purchased the inexpensive item. -- Of course, use of the loss-leader concept is not limited to dealings between retailers and the public; it also plays a role in business-to-business transactions. -- HTH!
