Italian term or phrase: Pharmacuetical trademark question
Hi,

I am working on a legal doc that contains many trademark names of drugs, and I wondered if it is usual to use the trademark name given in the text, or to use the UK/US version, eg: ORAXIM TM (ranitidine hydrochloride) is the Italian name, but it is known as ZANTAC TM in the UK/US.
What do you do?

Some Trade Names, however, are international and used worldwide (like ZANTAC, that is sold in Italy too; BTW, ORAXIM is an oral antibiotic, not ranitidine HCl).

The problem in Italy, is the existence of the so called "co-marketing": a local pharmaceutical company can sell a drug under licence of the marketing authorization holder. In some countries only Glaxo can sell Ranitidine (ZANTAC); in Italy it is sold with about 10 different Trade Names.

You can check trade names (in Italy and UK) with online formularies (links below)

agree  Marie-Hélène Hayles: It also depends on where the court case is. I'd be inclined to do as Dee says leave the original as it is and give the UK/US tradename in brackets.
